With reference to your letter 17623 of the 8th
instant, I am directed by the Marquess of Salisbury
to transmit to you, for the information of Her Majesty's Secretary of State for the Colonies,
of correspondence which has passed between Lord

Salisbury and Her Majesty's Minister at Tokio,since
the date of my letter of the 28th of September last
on the subject of the duty on tea exported from
Formosa.
Lord Salisbury has ascertained from Six E.
Satow, who is now on leave in this country, that about the beginning of April he addressed a note
to the Japanese Minister for Foreign Affairs in the
sense of the instructions contained in His Lord-
ship's deapatch No.9 of the 20th of January.
